WowWee Rovio Wi-Fi Enabled Robotic WebCam

It's not for the average user, (What's this?) I bought this for experimenting with home robotic navigation and localization. The biggest advantage this platform has is the amount of 3rd-party software available for experimenting with it - Roborealm is the best example.
Run, Don't Walk - AWAY from this..., Wowwee discontinued making these several years ago, and no longer carries, warranties or services them. I had the misfortune of buying one, and found that the current batch are pre-defective refurbished devices.
Wowwee offered to trade a "Joebot" - a toy with no camera, audio or remote anything.
Mine is a useless brick.
Hide from this piece of Chinese junk.
buyer beware!!!, (What's this?)
A very complicated affordable toy with potential, (What's this?)
Rovio Discontinued by Wowee but still being Sold,
5 Months into the 6 month warranty provided with this toy the base unit started having a flashing rid light. I put in for warranty support and this is the response I received from Wowee..

"This is associated with a defective ac adapter. Unfortunately that item has been discontinued and we no longer carry that particular part for it."

They are still linking to Amazon to sell this product but they refuse to Repair, replace or refund which is what their warranty says they will do.

I can't believe that Amazon is allowing them to sell their products and at the same time will not stand behind issues they are aware of.

Very disappointed in Wowee and Amazon.
Horrible, (What's this?) Sent this to argentina and never worked. Lost the money because is too expensive to send it back

Do not buy it.
Not worth the headache, (What's this?) This could be really cool but the software is very complicated to set up and will not even work with the CD that it ships with. You need to update the software before it works.

What I really wanted was to remotely communicate with it via internet. There is a automatic go back to the docking station thing that looks like it took along time to develop and probably increased the price of the toy. Well it never really works and is a waste.
WIll need parts replaced so expect to tinker with it, This is actually a great idea and design- but the parts are very poor. I had to replace the sensors in the feet (And I had to soldier some connections,) one of the LED's is out, and the biggest issue of all is the default batter that comest with it only holds a charge for a few minutes max- if that. I got a replacement from them and it still was worthless.

I ended up purchasing a aftermarket battery with more power and bam! works great for long time now and with the existing charger. Finally after replacing the wheel sensors, the issue returned (the unit turns drastically to the left) but can be compensated by going right a lot. Annoying but it works.

All and all it gets the job done- I can wander around my house with a camera from anywhere in the world. One nice feature is the recharging base it will automatically return to and recharge the battery. Good if you want to leave it unattended for days / weeks and keep it charged for daily use.

This is a tinkerers toy- don't expect it to work right out of the box.
Great tor for an MIT robotics geek, but not for us mortals, (What's this?) This "toy" seems to assume that you understand web jargon and know all about web routers and how to connect complex devices to them. I am an engineer with some IT experience at the user level, so can install my own router and web cam etc. But this "toy" pushed me to my limits. I finally got it working - but only within my wireless LAN. When I tried to set it up for remote web access the Rovio crashed completely and no longer responded at all. So I returned it.

For the short while that it worked, it was amazing. It was fascinating watching it find "home" and back into it's charger by itself. The search pattern it used was very efficient.

The "headlight" is so dim as to be useless and the Rovio can't see when under furniture. Other folks have hacked in a brighter LED - so that's a good option.

Just don't think of this as a kid toy.
Do NOT Purchase This Toy, My 10-year old son saved all of his birthday, etc. present money for around two years to purchase this device. I have been fighting with the Rovio for weeks now and still cannot get it to function reliably. I tried to install the device multiple times on two different computers and couldn't get the device to connect to the software or to my router (which I have multiple other devices connected successfully).

I now bought Apps for my iPhone and iPad. Even these will not connect to the rovio consistently. This purchase has been a disaster for me, with my son in tears every time we trial and fail to get it working properly. I have a fair amount of computer experience, although not a "techy." It also fails to go home and dock properly and will just decide "on its own" to come out of the dock slightly. Mostly, I cannot get the computers and Apps to connect to the device, so most of the time, its useless.

There is NO support from Wowee. There is no one to call. I put in a help ticket. After a few days, I got an email back: "What you need to do is look in your owners manual."

Do NOT purchase this device. It has brought me nothing but frustration.
