Usable But Not Fantastic. Overpriced., The resolution of the Creative Labs Live! Cam is not great, but the Web cam does have some cool features.
Resolution
----------
First off, let's talk resolution. The Web cam has a resolution of only 640 x 480. Creative Labs claims a resolution of 800 x 600 for video capture and a 1.3 megapixel resolution for still image capture -- Do not be misled -- these specs are so-called digital (or interpolated) resolutions - that means the optical (real) resolution of 640 x 480 is increased through software "enhancement." The resulting picture after enhancement is still pretty blocky.
Motion Sensor
-------------
The Web cam can be used as a motion sensor to set off an alarm when it detects motion. This feature works very well. The sensitivity of the motion sensor can be changed. You can also select the alarm (a wave file) to sound through your speakers.
Additionally, it can be set to take a snapshot and immediately send the snapshot to an email of your choice when it senses motion. Pretty nifty.
Adequate Video for low cost device, (What's this?) It works as advertised. The software is just fair and nags to buy an upgrade. I found that I could use this on PC's lacking a camera (mostly desktops and older laptops) to get adequate performance for video telephone calls and for conference calls where some information needs to be exchanged. There is enough resolution for viewing some documents. The clamp is limited in that it can only be mounted on a horizontal surface. There is no way to rotate the camera by 90 degrees. All-in-all I can recommend this camera as an add-on to an older computer or as a camera that monitors a room. When using this on a desktop computer, the rigid mounting clamp means that you have to do something special to mount it horizontally as it will not fit on an average monitor (too thick).
Great camera!, (What's this?) I love this camera. Unlike many notebook cams, the clip is quite adustable in thickness and has solid-holding rubber grips, so it attaches well to any part of your screen. I like the ability to attach it to the lower side of my screen (rather than the top), so it looks more directly at my face when I am doing web conferencing. The camera also swivels, which helps a lot to position the camera correctly. The image is great and the software tools that I have used so far have all worked really well.
Garbage., (What's this?) This webcam is garbage, pure and simple. The process for installing the software was exhaustive, and not user friendly. When I finally got it installed and went to use it, a box popped up that said "Creative ?????????-?????" and had the option for "ok" or "cancel". I hit 'ok' and the error message just kept popping up over and over again, so I hit 'cancel' and tried again. Same problem. I uninstalled and then reinstalled. Same problem. I went to the creative website and tried to update the driver. It said the old driver needed to be uninstalled first, I clicked 'ok' and then got that weird question mark error message again. I went through hell and back trying to uninstall the old driver before being able to finally install the updated one. Once I got the new driver installed, it worked.
The image was blurry and shaky. It says it auto focuses, but I had to manually focus it by turning the lens to get it anywhere near decent. At it's best, the image quality is still very poor and dark.
A good, but unspectacular webcam, (What's this?) The Creative Labs Live! Cam Pro VGA Webcam will get the job done, just don't expect any awesome features.
The install was relatively simple and nothing out the ordinary. I did have to perform a mandatory restart on both Vista machines I tested it on, though. You have the option to install several software programs, as well as the cam's drivers. It took around 5 minutes total for the install to finish. You get the basic Creative Webcam software that allows you take pics and videos.
Just what I needed for notebook video sharing on the road, (What's this?) The Creative Labs Live! Cam Pro VGA Webcam for Notebooks is a small web camera with good image rendering and built with pretty good quality materials. It is perfect for those on the road or people attached to their notebooks such as students or business people.
The software was easy to install and is not too complicated to use. It has some neat video effects for those who wish to play around a little bit. The sturdy clip will hold it onto the top of your laptop screen quite well. ***However*** It will not expand wide enough to fit a standard monitor. The cord is very short, to help cut down on excess cord when attaching it to your notebook. A USB extension would have been nice for those who wish to place it elsewhere. I do like the handy hard case that comes with it.
Another benefit is that Creative brand is a very common and well known brand, so many third party video applications support it.
If you are looking for a quality web cam for notebook fun or business, you should consider this one.
Amazing for The Price, (What's this?) I bought this items because it was cheap, but was amazed at what I got for the price. If you want a basic webcam then this can't be beaten for the price. It performed surprisingly well even in low light.
Splendid entry level product. Worth every penny you pay.
Avoid, (What's this?) Not much to write about: picture quality is lover than cheapest noname webcams. Mount clip has short run - will work for laptops but unlikely for desktop monitors(clip is too small even for my thin LED display).
Usable But Not Fantastic, (What's this?) Here's a quick and dirty rundown:
Resolution
----------
The resolution of 640 x 480 is not great. Do not be misled: the advertised resoltuion of 800 x 600 for video capture and 1.3 megapixel for still image capture are digital, or interpolated, resolutions - that means the optical (real) resolution of 640 x 480 is increased through software "enhancement." The resulting picture is still looks pretty blocky.
Motion Sensor
-------------
The motion sensor sets off an alarm. The sensitivity of the motion sensor can be changed. This feature works very well. It can be set to take a snapshot and immediately send the snapshot to an email when it senses motion.
Compact and Portable
------------------
The cam fits snugly into a hard plastic case that measures a mere 3.5" x 2.5" x 1".
- Tons of Software
------------------
The package comes with loads of software like video editing and screen capture apps.
Average Web Cam at a Pretty Good Price, (What's this?) Creative Labs Live! Cam Pro VGA Webcam for Notebooks gets the job done for most day-to-day web cam applications, but it is nothing to write home about.
The good:
The camera has a great clip system. I know this sounds pretty lame as features go, but I found it came in very handy. While it is designed to mount the camera on the top of a notebook computer's LCD screen, it also works well on cords, mic stands, lamps, etc. I own several web cams and I now wonder how I managed before I had one with a built in clip.
The camera's size and weight are just right for its intended use. Its color and design compliment and tend to blend into today's notebooks and the lens barrel design makes it easy to aim without needing to see the screen while doing it.
The software installed easily and was pretty straight forward to use.
The bad and the so-so:
The video quality is average at best. There is considerable artifacting with even moderately fast movement. It has very poor low-light qualities, don't get too far from a lamp and don't plan to use your monitor as a light source. Color reproduction is poor. The colors look washed out and weak.
